Last week Haiping Su, a UC-Santa Cruz earth sciences researcher at NASA Ames Research Center, filed a federal lawsuit against the FBI and NASA Ames for labeling him a “security threat” and destroying his career. Su, a U.S. citizen and Chinese national, underwent a joint NASA-FBI investigation last year. According to the San Jose Mercury News, he asks that a federal judge “clear his name” and award damages from the government.

James McManis, Su’s lawyer, suspects the accusation stems from Su’s status as a Chinese national. McManis contends that Su’s agricultural project at UCSCChas nothing to do with national security and denies any involvement by his client in spying.
