John Laird to Join the Ranks of the Unemployed

Former 27th District Assemblyman and Santa Cruz mayor John Laird may be out of work on Thursday if the California State Budget is approved. The Integrated Waste Management Board, to which he was recently appointed, is about to be eliminated, and the waste agency that it oversees is about to be merged with the Department of Conservation. What concerns him most about the decision is not the possible loss of income—members of the Board make $132,000, covered by waste fees—but the fact that waste management, including the allocation of hazardous waste permits—will be taken over by state employees at the Department of Conservation, with no public accountability such as the Waste Management Board provides.
