More: News, budget cuts, domestic violence services, line item veto

Today at the Santa Cruz clock tower, women’s services advocates rallied to protest the complete elimination of state support to domestic violence services under the state’s Department of Public Health. The governor’s last-minute line item veto erased all $16.3 million that backed domestic violence centers and services throughout the state; the county will lose $630,000 in the deal. Dressed in purple, employees, volunteers and supporters of Women’s Crisis Support~Defensa de Mujeres and Walnut Avenue Women’s Center gathered at the base of the clock tower, carrying signs and chanting, “Stop governor cuts to domestic services!” Representing the women and children that will not receive services because of the cuts were over 800 pairs of shoes, a chilling reminder of what the end result of these cuts could be.
