With predictions of a wet El Niño winter in the air, Santa Cruz residents are hopeful that the state’s three-year drought may finally be coming to an end. Santa Cruz has cut back water usage by about 15 percent or more in the past year, but water officials are still asking customers to cut back, especially when it comes to watering their lawns. The situation is worst in the Santa Cruz Water District, which was forced to declare a water emergency earlier this year. The Soquel Creek Water District is faring much better, but even there, the district has increased patrols to identify customers wasting water. Conservation has decreased over the past few months, says District Conservation Manager Ron Duncan, and the aquifers that provide the district with water are still at risk.
