Citing the dangers of second-hand smoke and the number of cigarette butts littering the streets and beaches, city leaders in Santa Cruz will meet Tuesday, Sept. 8 to extend a smoking ban through much of downtown. The ban would include all of Pacific Avenue and a stretch of Beach Street, running from the Municipal Wharf to Third Street, the entire Wharf, all city parks, outside bars, cafés, restaurants, and within 25 feet of any door or window used by the public. In addition, the number of smoking rooms in hotels would be decreased from 25 to 10 percent. If passed, the new law would go into effect on Oct. 20, with citations being issued a month later.
