Efrain Toledo Martinez, 54, of the Toledo Harkins Slough Ranch pleaded no contest to animal abuse and was sentenced to pay $868 to Animal Services. Despite its name, the Toledo Harkins Slough Ranch is actually a small, “custom” slaughterhouse. Though many of the animals appeared in good health, Martinez was charged with two counts of animal neglect after failing to provide food and proper care for a cow, a sheep, two rabbits and a dozen goats. During the investigation, Animal Services impounded 29 animals and euthanized one.
