Pogonip Rangers in Danger
Mar 16, 2010, by Curtis Cartier News
A standard-issue Santa Cruz park ranger uniform comes with a forest green shirt and slacks, hiking boots, a wide-brimmed hat and a tool belt containing a Leatherman multi-tool, a flashlight, a notepad, a two-way radio and a can of pepper spray. Nowhere in any pocket, holster or clip is a device designed to assist a ranger in a gunfight. So when Rangers Brian Watson and Gar Eidam stumbled onto an illegal campsite in the Pogonip last month and found $850 worth of heroin and a loaded .357 magnum handgun, they radioed in for help from the Santa Cruz Police Parks Unit. Tightening of the Santa Cruz Greenbelt
Aug 05, 2009, by Michelle Camerlingo News
IN THE CRISP light of a spring day, Cathy Puccinelli stands quietly, her eyes taking in the land that has been in her family for more than 100 years. The echo of flowing water from the adjacent Pogonip Creek is a perfect backdrop for the sprawling seven-acre property, made up of a cottagelike farmhouse with a well-kept yard and a large organic farming field.
Puccinelli says the land hasnt changed much since her Italian immigrant grandparents bought it in 1900 to farm. But no one wanted it then, she says. It was right next to the tannery, so it smelled of blood and hide. (With slide show) -
