New Funds to Boost UC-Santa Cruz Infrastructure
Aug 05, 2009, by Staff NewsState Treasurer Bill Lockyer announced a move Aug. 4 to improve University of California infrastructure across eight campuses by setting up $200 million in bond funds. The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that UC-Santa Cruz will receive $64 million, which will go toward the new Biomedical Sciences & Engineering Facility.

In late May, a small grassroots organization called Transition Santa Cruz convened for an evening meeting at the police station on Center Street. The subject of the hour was how the community could bolster Santa Cruzs public transportation system and steer residents away from sprawl and dependency on cars for every outing and errand. Led in part by Micah Posner, director of the cycling advocacy group People Power, the discussion quickly veered into a debate over whether or not high-density housing would facilitate a public rail system or do the opposite and lead to more cars on the streets.

Think Local First Spreads the Money Around

The goal was to turn $500 into $15,000 in local commerce in 30 days. The method was for five local banks to donate $100 apiece to five lucky raffle ticket winners, then for the recipient of each check to spend it at one of TLFs 150 member businesses, each of which would, in turn, repeat the process. In theory, by keeping the money within the community, each $100 check would be spent dozens of times, thus producing thousands of dollars in revenue for goods and services along the way.
