Santa Cruz Medi-Pot Collective Settles With Feds
Jan 26, 2010, by Jessica Lussenhop News
The morning of Friday, Jan. 22 was a long time coming for Michael Corral. As he walked up to the doors of the federal courthouse in downtown San Jose, members of the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana, the collective he helped found in Santa Cruz in 1996, were slowly gathering outside the glass doors. Some leaned on canes and walkers. One member had a seeing–eye dog, another a wheelchair.
“It’s a draw. They didn’t win, we didn’t win,” Corral said. “This has gone on so long, it was time for it to end.” -

Bud Boundaries
Nov 25, 2009, by Curtis Cartier News
When United States Attorney General Eric Holder announced in February that he would stop ordering federal law enforcement raids on medical marijuana providers as long as they complied with state law, entrepreneurs around the country scrambled to open their own pot shops. Santa Cruz, being ahead of the curve on all things cannabis, already had two dispensaries in town, but city officials say they still received more than 60 calls from interested growers between then and June, when a temporary moratorium was put on all dispensary applications. Now, after last Thursday’s meeting of the Santa Cruz Planning Commission, city leaders are one step closer to making the temporary freeze of two pot clubs in town permanent.

New Taxes Unlikely for Medical Marijuana
Nov 18, 2009, by Danny Wool News
Santa Cruz is hoping to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries in the city, but that does not mean that it will be imposing new taxes on them, at least for now. In addition to state and federal taxes, the dispensaries currently pay a 9.5 cent sales tax to the city. It has been suggested that an additional tax be paid by the dispensaries, in part to limit the number of nonlocals who come to Santa Cruz to buy marijuana. According to some estimates, only 25 percent of the customers at the city’s two dispensaries live in the City of Santa Cruz. Another 50 percent live in the county, while 25 percent come from out-of-county.

Santa Cruz to Examine Moratorium on Medical Marijuana
Jul 22, 2009, by Staff NewsCity officials in Santa Cruz will be deciding on Tuesday whether to extend the 45-day moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries by another 10 and a half months, to allow them more time to examine the issue. The existing rules were written over a decade ago. Some local business owners have expressed support for the moratorium. They argue that a weakening of the rules could lead to dispensaries on every city block, changing the citys character.
