Santa Cruz Hatchery to Release Fish Early

The Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project is planning to release 23,000 steelhead trout into the San Lorenzo River and Scott Creek, four months ahead of schedule this year. The fish are normally released in April. At the same time, 1,000 coho salmon have been transported to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s laboratory at Terrace Point.

Why should anyone care if California salmon, or local fishermen, go the way of the dodo? Can’t we just buy fish from Alaska? And what’s wrong with the farmed stuff, anyway? Because of economic suffering in the Central Valley, some are calling for an end to environmental protections for California’s once-mighty salmon runs.

There was surely a time when the last thing an aspiring forester ever thought he or she would be concerned with was protecting fish. Now, it seems, tiptoeing around salmon and steelhead is as natural a part of life for loggers in northern California as poison oak, and the laws that guard the states threatened salmonids might be about to get tougher.
